If there isn’t going to be a changing of the guard in Texas school rugby, there is at least a shuffling of the guard roster.
Celina HS has emerged as a team to watch after their sterling win over Dallas Jesuit last week and then this week in their 88-12 victory over Allen.
“We have a very strong squad this year,” said Head Coach Mark Kissinger. “What’s funny is that we didn’t have a single returning starter in our forward pack this year from last year. Before the season, I told my assistant coaches that we have a more ill-prepared forward pack for a first game. Goes to show you what I know!”
It’s often true that when players see some key teammates leave or get injured, as a group they take on the responsibility of filling the void. That, it seems, is what Celina’s forwards did.
Against Dallas Jesuit, they started a freshman lock and three sophomores (two props and a flanker) in the forwards.
Their halfback combination was a freshman and a sophomore ... they took a red card 10 minutes into the second half.
And yet they won 64-20.
