It was an interesting weekend in the Lindenwood tournament.

The scores are all relatively low because these were shortened games.

St. Louis University High edged Bixby 7-5 and then on Sunday tied Monarch 19-19.

Matthew Conte and Jay Green led the forward effort with their running and they were good on defense, as well.

The backline attack was in the capable hands of as Will Rainey and Will Orlando, who read the defenses effectively.

Monarch, it's fair to point out, were without Henry Whitcher (son of former USA 7s captain Kevin), who was with the Eagle Impact Rugby Academy team at the Vancouver 7s.

Still, they showed well enough, beating St. Thomas Aquinas 11-0 and losing to Bixby 22-5. Monarch's JV side went 4-0.

For Bixby, this was a good follow-on from wins over St. Thomas Aquinas and KC Jr. Blues in preseason and they did well to shake off the close loss to SLUH.

They defeated Monarch as mentioned above and also were impressive in a 55-17 win over the St. Louis Jets to go with their tie with SLU.

"SLUH is a solid team we had trouble getting attack going," said Bixby DOR Chris Smith. "We didn’t capitalize on multiple scoring opportunities in last few minutes of match that would have got the job done, but hats off to SLUH for staying composed and earning the W."

Smith added that the entire weekend was used.

"It was a great weekend to experiment a bit with lineups and get some new kids some valuable minutes. We have a lot of alumni playing at Lindenwood University."

One of those alumni, JD Martin, scored three tries for Lindenwood in front of a strong Bixby crowd.

Senior hooker Brady Dale was outstanding in the scrums and a lock-down tackler. Junior Max Brooks had a very productive weekend playing in both the forwards and backs but did pick up an injury on the weekend.
