Life Holds Off Davenport
Life Holds Off Davenport
Life University moved to 3-0 in the DIA Mid-South Conference after a 27-3 defeat of Davenport in Marietta, Ga.
This was the second straight conference game in which Life had prevented an opponent from scoring a try. Davenport, which had had no warmup games before the spring conference games started, had several scoring opportunities but just couldn't crack the Running Eagles red zone defense.
Life got an early try from South Doyle HS product Harley Wheeler, and added a penalty while Davenport put an early penalty off the post. With the score 8-0, Davenport had another chanc at a penalty goal. It was a long kick and fell short, and Life recovered the ball and booted downfield. Zander van Schalkwyk chased it down, scooped up the ball, and was in under the posts. That try, with the conversion, was a severe body blow to Davenport's comeback hopes.
Davenport did get a penalty before the halftime break, but in the second half Life pulled away. Alex MacDonald and then Wheeler scored his second to finish it off.
It was perhaps a closer game than the score indicates, but it was also another superb defensive effort from Life.
