La Costa Canyon have to be happy with the win.

It’s all to play for in SoCal’s new Premier League after La Costa Canyon defeated Cathedral Catholic 43-33 Saturday in Carlsbad.

This was a close one throughout. LCC threatened the Dons’ line early on and Cathedral battled hard to keep the Mavericks out.

And in fact some five minutes later it would be Cathedral that scored, launching off a lineout, and quickly going wide before prop Will McDermott got a flat pass and charged over.

LCC answered almost immediately when fullback Kai Molldrem broke a tackle and cantered in. the Mavericks held the lion’s share of the territory for several minutes after that but couldn’t get close enough to secure points.

Cathedral showcased their passing skill to get close and then as the forwards worked hard to consolidate center Kingston Hawkins snapped off a back-handed pass to hooker Nicholas Ocon on the wing.

Trent Boyle hit a well-taken conversion for a 12-5 lead.

Once again LCC answered quickly, punishing a CC penalty by taking the lineout and sending their forwards to hit the line. No. 8 Luke Hensley picked up to drive over. Max Ricono converted to tied it up.

Just before halftime LCC charged over to potentially get that lead, but the Dons were up for it and held the Mavericks up in-goal. So the teams switched sides at 12-12.

About three minutes into the second half LCC finally did take the lead when Hensley swooped in to intercept a pass out wide and charge in from about 45 meters. Off the restart the Mavericks the ball bounced to prop Henry Mallory on the wing. He showed an excellent turn over pace as a front-rower and he was gone for 60 meters and a try. Cathedral sent about five players to win that restart and probably would have benefited from having at least one player just standing off to gather a loose ball  … or catch a loose ballcarrier.

Conversion good and LCC led 26-12.

With their tails up the Mavericks kept playing in Cathedral’s end. They worked the forwards again, spun it wide, and finished nicely on a pick-and-go in the corner.

Ten minutes into the second half and it was 33-12 after an excellent kick from Ricono.

Now the Dons were chasing this game while LCC was happy to take a few risks. But the Dons weren’t done. A big carry from loose forward Adrian Aybar got Cathedral going forward and then some nifty ball movement got them a try on the right side. This was really the first  chance for Cathedral to play on the front foot in the second half. Hawkins, once again, was influential here.

Another penalty from Cathedral set up yet another lineout for LCC. And the Mavericks scored with a thundering run through several tacklers. Now it was 40-19 with maybe 14 minutes to go.

Cathedral kept at it, scored another try, and one more in the corner with a few minutes to go. Boyle's excellent conversion made it a one-score game with time winding down.

But LCC did well to kick deep and close out the game. They wouldn't let the Dons find space, and eventually their defense earned a holding-on penalty. Immediately all of the players pointed to the posts, and Ricono iced it with the penalty kick.

So that was it. LCC certainly took their chances and Hensley had a massive game for the Mavericks.

This game was for the Carrigan Cup, named for Carrigan Jones, a former LCC player who tragically died in 2024 at the age of 19 in a motorcycle accident. This is a challenge trophy between the two teams to honor a popular and much-loved teammate.

With the win LCC is 1-1 in the SoCal Premier, while Cathedral, who are very good and were certainly thinking about a championship, drop to 1-2 in the San Diego Division.

In the LA Division, Mira Costa won big over St. John Bosco to go to 2-1, keeping pace with Orange Lutheran. Mira Costa’s lone league loss is to La Costa Canyon.
