Fairfield Prep hosts the Northeast Jesuit Rugby Classic over the weekend, an event that is building nicely.

This year’s event is still fairly Northeast-centric, with teams from Connecticut, New York, and Massachusetts, but Dallas Jesuit is in on the action.

This is a launching pad for several teams coming out of cold-weather regions, but it is also a crucial cross-border test for teams (Xavier of NY, the aforementioned Dallas Jesuit)

All-in-all there are eight teams, all of which are, or have been relatively recently, ranked by GRR.

Premier Division
Fairfield Prep
Xavier High School
Boston College High School
Jesuit Dallas
Belmont HS (MA)
Staples HS
Trumbull HS
Fairfield Rugby Club

Fairfield Prep is the host and has enjoyed a solid start to the season, including a victory over Georgetown Prep and St. Augustine. Last week’s St. Augustine win saw Harry Crawford score three tries.

Xavier HS is again thinking about a high finish in the national tournament and they are coming off a tense win over Greenwich.

Trumbull and Staples have made the Connecticut school competition one of the more interesting competitions in the country. Trumbull did lose to Rye in their opener, while this tournament will be the first runout for Staples.

Fairfield Pegasi are coming off a loss to Simsbury and looking to bounce back from that.

That’s the case also for BC High and Belmont HS. These are the two perennial contenders in the Massachusetts IAA league, and they will be again. BC High are the defending state champs.

Dallas Jesuit has seen some up-and-down fortunes. They have lost to Strake Jesuit, SLUH, Celina, and St. Thomas. The losses to Strake, SLUH, and St. Thomas was by a total of nine points, so they are not that far off the pace.

They wrapped up their Texas regular season with wins over HEB and Allen. So in a 4-4 season they have a very positive points difference— +89. What the Rangers need to get from this event is showing they can win on the road.
