Lander Ends Spring Unbeaten in Nine 7s Games
CONWAY, S.C. – The Lander University men's rugby team beat Coastal Carolina twice and tied in another game as the two teams played a series of 7s games over the weekend.
The teams opened up their series with a 7-7 tie before Lander won the next two 24-10 and 24-17.
Lander needed a comeback in that second game, falling behind 10-5 before getting a try from Darrell Odle, and two from Cam Smith, who also scored the team's first, getting his hat trick for the game.
In the third match, once again Coastal took the lead, only for Shoemaker to score late in the first half. Coastal scored again and led 17-5 before Devin Bernhagen's long-distance try cut the deficit. Jeremiah Rosenbrook's try tied it, and Eric Burkett scored the game-winner.
Shoemaker converted five tries on the day and Austin Johnson scored the lone try in the first game.
Lander ended their spring 8-0-1, beating Belmont Abbey three times and Emory Henry three times earlier in the spring. They are looking to play in the CRC May Madness in New Orleans next month.
