Each tournament features 12 men's national teams and 12 women's national teams—it's the same 12 teams each time. The first six tournaments are where the teams accumulate points for seeding for the final tournament in LA.
As has been the case in previous years, teams earn points based on where they finish in each tournament, and are ranked based on those points.
Once they get to the Los Angeles event, things change.
The Championship tournament will feature only the top eight men's teams or top eight women's teams. Those will be the ones shooting for the championship.
Meanwhile, there will be another battle for who stays in the Top 12 for next year. The four teams ranked 9th through 12th, plus the top four teams from World Rugby's Challenger Series. This is a second-tier world tournament series designed to give other national teams competition and a chance t be in the SVNS World Series.
That requalification tournament will also be held at Dignity Health Sports Park.
What You Will See in LA
So over two days at Dignity Health Sports Park you will see action from four separate international 7s tournaments:
1. Men's SVNS World Series Championship
2. Women's SVNS World Series Championship
3. Men's Requalification Tournament
4. Women's Requalification Tournament
That will be 32 teams over two days, almost certainly using two fields. There will be no shortage of drama or teams fighting for their rugby future.
