Jesuit Rides Strong 2nd Half To Beat Marin
On a warm sunny day at Cal Maritime’s rugby complex, the Marauders of Jesuit clashed with the Highlanders of Marin and opened it up in the second half to win 43-0.
Jesuit was able to jump out to a quick lead with Eightman Max Sackett finding a gap off a lineout to dot down. Fullback Mason Phillips, who had a great day with the boot, converted to make it a 7-0 game.
Marin stifled Jesuit for long patches and when the Marauders did touch the ball they often forced a pass or went for the homerun ball.
In the thirtieth minute, winger James Bayard kicked and then chased to create an opportunity for inside center Devin Florez, who was captain on the day, to intercept and slice through to score. Phillips hit the conversion.
Mason Phillips closed out the half with a penalty to put Jesuit up 17-0.
Florez opened the scoring in the second half and Jesuit started to pull away. Junior Flyhalf Max Schumacher scored on a long run off a busted play to score. Jesuit was on the front foot again with a turnover at scrum time. Some smart play and quick ball allowed replacement scrumhalf David Starnes to put Florez through for another try.
The next kickoff saw Joe Marchant set a solid platform. Starnes sent a kick down for wing Ben Skinner to chase. The bounce of the ball allowed Skinner to walk in untouched. Phillips ended the day with a penalty to take his tally on the day to 18 points from the boot.
Marchant and Phillips were named Man of the Match.
“The team showed poise and improvement from just one week, but we are still working on our combinations,” said Head Coach John Shorey. “This will be a good month to tweak and adjust, but I like our backrow combination and the skills they bring the team.”
