International Rugby Academy – Southwest USA (IRANZ SW USA) successfully concluded its inaugural rugby development camp at Grand Canyon University this past weekend, bringing together athletes, coaches, families, and community leaders from across Arizona and the Southwest for a transformative week focused on growth both on and off the field.

Over five days, participants engaged in rugby instruction, leadership development, teamwork activities, and personal growth opportunities led by coaches and staff from International Rugby Academy New Zealand, one of the world's most respected rugby development organizations.

While rugby served as the foundation of the experience, the camp emphasized values that extend far beyond sport, including leadership, discipline, resilience, accountability, confidence, teamwork, and respect.

"The most important outcome of this week wasn't measured solely by athletic performance," said Scott Mead, General Manager of International Rugby Academy–Southwest USA. "It was measured by the growth we witnessed in our athletes. We saw individuals challenge themselves, build confidence, develop new relationships, and strengthen the habits and mindset that contribute to success in sport and in life."

The inaugural camp represents the beginning of a broader effort to increase awareness of rugby throughout Arizona and the Southwest while creating meaningful opportunities for athletes to develop as competitors, leaders, and contributing members of their communities.

Parent Chris Gray, whose son, Braxton, attended, noticed the work that went into the camp.

"[We] appreciate all the time, effort, and planning that went into making the camp a success," Gray said in a testimonial. "Braxton had a great experience and came away with a better understanding of the game, increased confidence, and a renewed excitement for rugby. We are grateful for the coaching, mentorship, and positive environment."

Participants experienced rugby's unique values-based culture while learning from experienced international coaches committed to helping athletes reach their full potential both on and off the field.

"This week was about helping individuals discover what they are capable of becoming," said Wayne Taylor, Chief Executive Officer of International Rugby Academy New Zealand. "Sport can be one of the most powerful tools we have to develop character, leadership, confidence, and resilience. Rugby teaches lessons that carry forward into education, careers, relationships, and community life."

Grand Canyon University hosted the inaugural camp and provided an outstanding environment for learning, development, and community building.

"We were honored to host this inaugural event," added Sean O'Leary, Director of Rugby and Men's Head Coach at Grand Canyon University. "What stood out most was the positive environment that was created for athletes to learn, grow, and challenge themselves. This initiative aligns with many of the values we strive to foster through collegiate athletics and personal development."

For Adolfo Sanchez, Director of Rugby for International Rugby Academy – Southwest USA, the week demonstrated the tremendous opportunity that exists to grow the game while helping athletes develop skills that extend beyond competition.

"Rugby is a sport that challenges individuals to become the best version of themselves," said Sanchez. "Whether an athlete's goals involve competing at the highest levels of the game or pursuing personal growth, rugby develops leadership, accountability, resilience, and confidence. Our goal is to create meaningful opportunities for athletes to grow both on and off the field while helping more people discover the unique culture and values that
make rugby special."

"It's such a beautiful sport. It's the most family-oriented sport I've ever played. I wrestled, I played soccer, football, and none of it compares to rugby." said Caleb Espino, who has been playing for only two months now.

Looking ahead, International Rugby Academy – Southwest USA plans to expand athlete development opportunities throughout the Southwest, strengthen coach education initiatives, deepen partnerships with schools, clubs, universities, and community organizations, and increase awareness of rugby as a sport that develops leadership, character, resilience, and lifelong skills.

The organization will continue working alongside the Dual Pathway Initiative Foundation to support leadership development, educational success, wellness, community engagement, and opportunities that help athletes succeed both on and off the field.

As rugby continues to gain momentum across the United States, including the upcoming Olympic Games and future Rugby World Cups, International Rugby Academy – Southwest USA sees a unique opportunity to increase awareness of the sport while helping athletes develop the skills, mindset, and character necessary to succeed in competition, education, careers, and community life.

"Our vision extends far beyond developing rugby players," Mead said. "We are committed to helping athletes build confidence, leadership, discipline, resilience, and a growth mindset. Through rugby, we have an opportunity to develop individuals who will make a positive impact in their communities, professions, and wherever life takes them. That is the legacy we hope to build."

"I'm getting a lot of never-give-up," said player Samantha Insley. "A lot of ways to focus my goals and actually achieve. I feel much like I'm going to come out of this with a plan, like I'm going to do something. I'm going to make something happen."

The inaugural camp was made possible through the support of key partners and sponsors, including Showcase Honda and Grand Canyon University. Their commitment helped turn vision into action, creating meaningful opportunities for athlete development, leadership growth, and community engagement. IRANZ SW USA continues to welcome organizations that share a commitment to investing in young people, strengthening communities, and helping build a lasting legacy through sport.
