Northeastern Fall 2026.
Northeastern edged a key contender this week.

In a conference of 13 teams, after just a few weeks, only three teams are undefeated.

The Liberty D1AA is full of major questions, what with some teams moving in from NCR D1, and some coach changes, and your regular yearly changes. So, really, who knows who will be strong?

Victories by Northeaster, Boston College, and ... Buffalo leave those teams unbeaten.

Northeastern

NU edged Iona 26-24 Sunday in a clash of two teams that had started 2-0.

The Huskies took an early 14-0 lead over the Gaels, but Iona stormed back and led late in the match.

With time winding down, captain and flyhalf Harry Johnston scored to win the game for Northeastern.

The Huskies were led defensively by front-rowers Jake Pobjoy and Nate Hirsch. Those two both racked up high tackle counts, and, ultimately, it was the hard work on D against a tough Iona side that was a major factor.

"The difference was discipline," said Northeastern Head Coach Ed Tubridy. "Iona had a few more penalties than us and it hurt them, especially when they got into good territory."

With the win, Northeastern is now 3-0.

Boston College

Boston College handed Columbia their first conference loss of the season, winning impressively 66-14.

Despite the big score it was a slow start for the Eagles and Head Coach Rob Conway said his team failed to really capitalize one scoring chances and possession in the first 15 minutes.

"We were deep inside of the Columbia 22, but it took a while," said Conway. "Eventually we got into a good rhythm."

Because of a bye week and then the big Nor'easter that slammed New England, BC hasn't played in three weeks and this early in the fall that was something the team had to deal with.

However, once it came together the tries came.

BC's standout player was flanker Adam Bornhorst, who put in a massive shift.

"He has been an absolute machine for us," said Conway. "His work rate in defense is unbeatable. He hit players like a train while also having great decision-making and impeccable pass timing."

That is a nice combination.

Buffalo

Also at 3-0 is the State University at Buffalo, or put more simply, UB.

The Bulls defeated Babson with an excellent defensive performance 27-3.

Head Coach Owen Lawther praised his teams performance in the scrums and lineouts. Controlling possession helped them control the game.

Defensively, "we were able to contain Babson's counterattacks well," added Lawther.

Openside flanker Dylan Rager was the UB Man of the Match. He was the defensive lead, forced several turnovers, and set up a key momentum-changing try off one of those turnovers.

So with the standings clear above, next week will have its key matchups.

BC takes on a UMass team that may be 1-2 but with two close-loss bonus points and two bonus points for four tries, they are not that far behind.

And then bigger than that will be 3-0 Northeastern vs 3-0 Buffalo in the Nickel City.
