Indiana Hawks Show Well in All-Star Warmup
The Indiana Hawks, Indiana Speed, and Celtic Elite met up in a girls Midwest All-Star Challenge this past weekend in what is basically a preview of the upcoming Midwest RCT.
The Indiana Hawks won both of their gams, beating the Speed 27-20 and the Celtic Elite 32-26. The Celtic Elite defeated the Speed to go 1-1, and the Celtic Elite JV Girls went 2-0.
For the Hawks, it was a good outing. The team draws players from a variety of Indiana HS teams, as well as the Grandville program out of Michigan. Matja Saarenheimo-VanderHorst was one of the Hawks standouts and she made the long trek from Michigan to try out for the game. Theresa Kubiak (South Bend) and Natalie Locke (Warsaw) were also excellent.
Head Coach Trevor Cracknell held a state-wide search for players and he said the players worked hard to embrace a more open, slightly different style of play.
"We saw some good things and certainly some things to improve on," Cracknell said. "We're not putting in a game plan where players are able to know exactly what to do at every turn, so what they need to do is read the game better. If they see a gap, then someone has to go through it."
Celtic Elite got some good performances over the weekend, with St. Joseph's Academy's Annie Rolf and Hudson's Clara Brown on the scoreboard multiple times.
All three of these teams, plus Minnesota, will face off in Fishers, Ind. June 24-25 at the Midwest RCT.
