HSAAs to Elite 7s Final

The High School All Americans are into the Boys HS Elite 7s Final after putting in a close to flawless performance against the Upright Rugby Rogues in the semifinal.

The HSAA team will face British Columbia for the fifth time in a row in Sam Boyd Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The HSAA team beat Ontario II 44-0 in the quarterfinals, while BC shut out Atlantis 26-0 in the quarters. Upright Rugby beat the Washington Loggers 36-0, while Ontario I beat Utah 34-12.

So on to the semis. BC won comfortably over Ontario, while the HSAA shut out Upright 36-0.

The HSAA team opened the scoring when Brian Hannon grubbered a ball ahead for Travis Heer to chase. Heer, from the Back Bay club in Southern California, kept his eye on the loose ball, and booted it ahead and toward the posts. He chased hard and dove onto the ball just before it rolled dead. Hannon was good with the conversion for a 7-0 lead.

Pressure defense forced the Rogues into mistakes, and in fact throughout the game they saw little daylight in the HSAA defensive wall. The defensive pressure led to a try for Heer - hands out to the wing - and a 12-0 lead. That’s how the first half ended.

The second half was all HS All Americans. The first try of the half was the best of the day. Brian Hault made a try-saving tackle in the corner, and the HSAA team rescued the loose ball and started running up the right sideline. Leiki Fotu, Devin Lim, and Austin Taefu were all involved, sometimes more than once. The final offload found big Chase Bixby on his horse in support, and the 6-6 Granite Bay forward galloped over the line.

Hannon scored one of his own, just reward for some superior playmaking and a few thumping tackles. He converted to make it 24-0. Then it was hands out to Nault on the wing - not the usual stomping ground for the Shelton HS player out of Washington state - and 29-0. And finally Santa Monica’s Olan Moon White ghosted through.

Hannon was impressive as he has been all weekend, while Nault has been an ox.

This sets up the final between the HSAAs and BC at 2:51pm in Sam Boyd Stadium.
