HS Latest: Big Games in Arizona, North Carolina, and Florida
Some key results this weekend in Boys HS rugby, not all of them league games, but all with an influence on the rankings.
In a crossover between teams in Arizona and Southern California, Tempe defeated San Clemente in emphatic style 73-5. Tempe's powerful runners and overall pace carried the day.
In North Carolina Myers Park took care of Providence 44-7. It was rainy and cold and a difficult night for rugby, especially for those who aren't used to it, but Myers Park's discipline did much to get them through. First-year player and hooker Holden Hahn scored a try and reeled off some big runs while playing a strong defensive game. He was named the game's MVP.
Boys HS Scores from this Weekend
"All in all a good result," said Head Coach Jason Zehmke, who now looks ahead to a key clash with South Meck this coming Friday night.
That game carries playoff implications, and is a big rivalry game so much is on the line.
In Florida, Boca Raton defeated Key Biscayne 45-10 in very windy conditions to improve to 1-0-1. Okapi has the same record after defeating Cape 43-5, while Wellington, having earned a forfeit win in Week 1, is now 2-0 after edging Tampa 22-19. Cardinal Gibbons opened up their account with an emphatic 52-5 win over Naples.
Gibbons Head Coach Eric Aumann wasn't overjoyed with everything he saw.
"I would say I was not pleased with the complete performance," said Aumann. "The discipline was extremely poor for a veteran side but we did show a very good offensive attack and great defense."
They needed to defend well because with ball in hand Naples was very tough to stop and their continuity was solid. For Gibbons, No. 8 Brock Weaver, flyhalf Danny Feliciano, and inside center Tray Brown had big games and not only featured in the scorehseet but set up their teammates well also.
