Bishop Dwenger put on a very strong run of performances to beat Neuqua, St. Ignatius, and Notre Dame de la Salette to win the Boys Midwest Championships over the weekend.

Eight teams played in a bracket format, with Saturday seeing the quarterfinals and semifinals in shortened matches, and a longer match played for the placement games on Sunday.

Round 1

Dwenger got off to a quick start against Neuqua, scoring twice in the first 10 minutes. They extended that to a 24-0 advantage before making some changes. Neuqua scored twice late to make it 24-10.

St. Ignatius, which fields a team minus their seniors because this is prom weekend, were pushed a bit by St. Louis University High, but pulled away 36-22.

St. Edward held off a tough Penn side 27-7, while La Salette hammered Pulaski 54-0.

Round 2

Eager for a rematch with Ignatius Dwenger exploded in the first half once more. It was a back and forth battle in the first 10 minutes before a line break on the edge got them going. Doug Henry ran, offloaded, got back on his feet to get the return pass, and then fed Alex McCarthy for him to race up the sideline to score.

That was the best of the tries as Dwenger took a 19-0 lead, and held on 24-12.

La Salette and St. Edward had tied earlier in the season and this game was just as close. La Salette prevailed 26-19.

The Final

In the championship match, we saw a rematch of the 2025 final, which La Salette won. This was a battle. Once again Dwenger started on fire and scored twice in the first 10 meters.

La Salette responded with a penalty goal to make it 12-3 and that score held until halftime.

In the second half Dwenger camped out in the La Salette 22 for a long period, and nine minutes in Noah Hughes got over for a key try. Shortly after Jordan Fabini broke through to make it 22-3.

La Salette didn’t fold and they in fact held up Dwenger in-goal three times during the second half. The Illinois side scored with six minutes to go and then got a penalty right off the restart, kicked deep, worked their pattern, and scored another to make it 22-17 with maybe a minute to go.

On the ensuing restart, Dwenger tried to run out the clock. But the La Salette defense forced a penalty. They pressured past full time, keeping the ball and recycling well as Dwenger defended over 20 phases. They also committed a couple of penalties and that backed them up.

But a strong open-field tackle and challenge at the ruck forced a ball lost forward. That ended the game and Dwenger had held on 22-17.

This was a huge win for Dwenger.

“Bishop Dwenger has been attending the Midwest tournament since 2003 and this is our first championship,” said Head Coach Taylor Serres. “A majority of our seniors have been playing a side together since they were sophomores and it’s great to see this all come together for them. We are looking forward to finishing out our season with some crucial games coming up.”
