Greer Logs Two Wins Over Top Competition in SC
With rough weather and cold leading to games being called off, but the cold snap broke in South Carolina, allowing games to be held.
The Greer 76ers took on Wando and Cape Fear, and beat them both.
Game 1 – Greer (GRR #40) vs Wando (GRR #39)
This game was an early matchup of ranked teams that did not disappoint. Greer won 14-5 in a hard-hitting defensive affair. Greer came out strong early with a 14-0 first half lead, led by tries by junior scrumhalf Martin Sarkees and junior prop Adrian Stancil and two long conversions from flyhalf JW Sarkees. Two yellow cards to Greer in the second half combined with a spirited effort by Wando led by their two big forwards, Nick Flood and Jack Moran, made the game in doubt until the final whistle. Scrumhalf Martin Sarkees, with his poise and consistent play, earned Man of the Match.
“Our forwards dominated play when in possession," said Greer Head Coach Warran Taylor: "But we gave away chunks of field position with bad penalties. Our defense came up with several big hits, notably from forwards Eli Smith, Adrian Stancil, and Cole Urban to secure the win.”
Game 2 – Greer vs Cape Fear
Cape Fear came out firing and grabbed a 12-5 first half lead. Greer found their stride in the second half and scored three tries to pull away 26-12.
The first half was back and forth with Cape Fear scoring first. Greer followed up with a try to see the teams tied at 5-5. With no time left on the clock, Cape Fear capitalized on a well placed kick and cover to take a 12-5 halftime lead. The second half saw Greer run their pattern a bit better and run in three converted tries; loose forward Eli Smith scored two tries, and prop Adrian Stancil, one. They were awarded co-Men of the Match thanks to their big runs and hard-hitting defense.
“Once again the forward pack was dominant," said Taylor. "But this game we needed some great marshaling of the backline in the second half from flyhalf JW Sarkees to shut their attack down and break the game open.”
The South Carolina season continues through February with the State Championship game scheduled for February 22 at Spring Hill High School in Columbia.
