Greenwich v Xavier a Heated Rivalry
Greenwich v Xavier a Heated Rivalry
Longtime Tri-State-Area rivals Xavier HS and Greenwich meet up this weekend.
It’s a big game for Greenwich, which has run into some tough games of late - losing to Fort Hunt in the Jesuit Rugby Classic, and losing to Fairfield Pegasi in Conecticutt.
But it’s not all bad new for Greenwich, as they still managed a win over a tough Charlotte Catholic team as well as wins over Good Counsel and West End at the JRC. They needed some big performances from Luke Bienstock, flyhalf Fermin Moraiz, and scrumhalf Soh Nakayama, and got them.
It’s expected to be a full-strength Greenwich squad hosting Xavier Saturday night. As for Xavier, the New York City team won two games over the weekend, taking St. Anthony’s down 60-5 and Play Rugby USA Academy 58-7. Xavier has already split games with Penn and St. Ignatius, and this game with Greenwich is a good jumping-off point for a demanding series of games that will include Fordham Prep, Pelham, and the Boys NIT in Charlotte, NC.
This is a good rivalry between teams that take the matchup very seriously - and you can see that in the video below. Produced by Greenwich HS, it’s a pretty even-handed look at how the teams have battled each other over the years. Last year, Xavier needed a spirited comeback to win 37-26. See the full report here.
Kickoff is 7pm Eastern Time at Greenwich HS.
