Girls Stars & Stripes Announced

USA Rugby has announced the 50 girls high school players reporting to the 3rd annual Stars & Stripes assembly in Greeley, Colo. The players arrive tomorrow, July 21, and train together until Saturday, July 25, when a final match will be held. New Girls High School All American (GHSAA) coach Farrah Douglas will oversee the girls' camp.

"The goal is to have the best 100 high school players in attendance, regardless of region or location," wrote USA Rugby Youth & High School Director Kurt Weaver, who spoke to the selection of the boys' and girls' assemblies. "The emphasis on invites is to those best players."

Below is a tidied list of the female attendees, including their home clubs. A few state all-star teams competed at multiple Regional Cup Tournaments (RCT); therefore, some players from the same team were identified at different events. There were seven RCTs held, and the Southeast is notably missing from the list (Maryville's McKenzie Hawkins was invited to the Women's Junior All American camp).

"The South is our smallest region for girls high school rugby today, but with focus, plans to add more female players at the youth and high school level," Weaver reported. "It is not a worry, just a challenge we face in several areas of the country. With work and time, we will have national players from every state."

At present, there are no additional assemblies for the Stars & Stripes this upcoming season, but Weaver didn't discount the notion that a late add might occur before year's end, depending on feasibility.
