Girls All-Star Wrap
Girls All-Star Wrap
Here’s a quick wrap-up of the Girls Regional Cup Tournament all-star events from this past weekend.
The enduring theme in these tournaments was numbers - they were low, and we will address that in another article. Here we’ll just sate the facts - there were nine Girls JV teams slated to compete, and in fact only eight did so - the multi-state motley team put in the South bracket did not materialize. In the Varsity levels, there were only 15 teams in action over the three tournaments. So only 23 teams in total.
The JV scores for the Rocky Mountain Challenge (Mid America and Colorado in attendance, supposedly) were not recorded.
In the Northeast, perhaps one of the more robust contests occurred, and one where Rugby New Jersey dominated. The New Jersey Varsity team didn’t give up a point over three games, slamming Connecticut 70-0 and Massachusetts 100-0 before taking care of Western New York 43-0 in Sunday’s final. The result of the weekend, however, may well have been Western NY beating Pennsylvania 33-29 in what has to be considered an upset.
In the JV event, which was a nice little tournament of three teams, Empire and Pennsylvania beat Northeast Combined, and Rugby Pa beat Empire in a close one, 14-12, in the final.
Northeast Girls Order of Finish (records in parentheses)
Varsity:
1. New Jersey (3-0)
2. Western NY (2-1)
3. Pennsylvania (2-1)
4. Connecticut (1-2)
5. NY Cap/VT/Maryland (1-2)
6. Massachusetts (0-3)
JV:
1. Pennsylvania (2-0)
2. Empire (2-1)
3. Northeast Combined (0-3)
The South was a wild one, as Wisconsin looked untouchable on Day One, only to lose 22-21 to Tennessee on Sunday. As it turned out, that loss didn't hurt the Midwesterners much, as they finished pool play 2-1, as did the Celtic Elite and Tennessee. But to make the final Tennessee needed to win that game by 24, so one point wasn't going to do it.
So that set up the final between Wisconsin and Celtic Elite, which Wisconsin won comfortably 60-7. Tennessee beat Virginia to take 3rd. Virginia, despite going 0-4, was competitive in every game.
In the JV bracket, it became a three-team event, and Wisconsin ended up winning all four of their games, with Virginia topping Tennessee twice.
South Girls Order of Finish (records in parentheses)
Varsity:
1. Wisconsin (3-1)
2. Celtic Elite (2-2)
3. Tennessee (3-1)
4. Virginia (0-4)
JV:
1. Wisconsin (4-0)
2. Virginia (2-2)
3. Tennessee (0-4)
And in Aurora, Colo., at the Rocky Mountain Challenge, it was also a relatively small contest - five varsity teams and, as we mentioned before, only two JV teams on the schedule.
Utah dominated, beating Mid America 48-0, Idaho 42-5, and Colorado 31-0 before finally giving up points in the final, which they won over Minnesota.
Minnesota played well, downing Idaho, Colorado, and Mid American on the way to the final. The big shocker result of the weekend was Idaho tying Colorado and winning on penalty kicks to take 3rd.
The JV results weren’t recorded.
RMC Girls Order of Finish (records in parentheses)
Varsity:
1. Utah (4-0)
2. Minnesota (3-1)
3. Idaho (1-2-1) (won on kicks)
4. Colorado (1-2-1) (lost on kicks)
5. Mid America (0-4)
Six of the team games played were decided by 30 points or more, and two more by over 15. Only two games, the 3rd/4th game, and the final, could be called close.
