Georgia HS Season Starts
The Georgia High School Association league opened on Friday night with Norsemen beating Roswell 57-13 and Mill Creek defeating Lambert 40-22.
Two other games were rescheduled. Those both involved the Alpharetta Phoenix program, as Phoenix is fielding an A and B side in the league.
Phoenix A remain the favored team in this league, but nine teams are slated to compete in a tough eight-game schedule, so somebody could float to the top.
Next week, Roswell plays Pope, Walton faces Phoenix A, the Trojans play the Norsemen, and Mill Creek plays Phoenix B. All games are slated for Friday night, with Phoenix also hosting the very strong Charlotte Tigers on Saturday.
Already Alpharetta has beaten Chapin out of South Carolina and Charlotte Catholic out of North Carolina, as well as North Mecklenburg (also NC), and local rivals Mill Creek and Walton in fall play.
Their one blemish so far is a 26-7 loss to South Doyle in Tennessee.
Phoenix Head Coach Niall Fenton said South Doyle was “easily the best team we’ve faced.” Phoenix was undefeated in Georgia play last year, beating the Lassiter Trojans 15-11 in the state final. The only teams to beat them were South Doyle.
