Georgetown Prep Defeats Staples

Georgetown Prep did well to handle Staples' physicality.

The Georgetown Prep Hoyas bounced back from a string of tough recent losses with a 26-19 victory over Staples High School on May 5.

Prep and Staples are in their third year of a competitive series of matches, with Staples winning the previous two in 2022 and 2023. Both schools plan to continue the series in 2025 when Staples will host in Westport, CT.

Despite the morning rain, the game played fast and clean with Staples jumping out in front after stealing a Hoya ruck inside the Prep 22 and scoring an unconverted try. Prep bounced back when senior vice captain Quinn Long chipped over the Staples defense and played some footy for about 40 meters before touching down for a try, which he converted. Staples once against pressured Prep into an error by charging down a clearance kick which led to a Wreckers 5-meter scrum and a converted try after several phases at the goal line. Prep countered shortly thereafter with senior wing Tommy Brown returning a Staples clearance kick for a try, also converted by Quinn Long. At the half it was Prep 14, Staples 12.

Prep added to their lead in the second half when Junior scrum half Connor Long intercepted a Staples pass and raced 50-meters for a try, converted by brother Quinn. Prep added to their lead after a Staples handling error gave Prep 5-meter scrum. After a few phases senior captain Sam Keller punched over for the try. Staples bounced back on the ensuing kickoff and, after sustained pressure and pounding runs inside the Prep 22, went over for a converted try. Prep was able to hold out one last series of attacking phases in their half, with the final whistle sounding and Prep winning 26-19.

In addition to the try scorers, junior flanker Tommy Brault excelled in defense with numerous tackles and strong jackal work at the breakdown. This was augmented by strong running of senior lock Will Costello, who made several line breaks during the match.

Following the win, senior captain Sam Keller remarked on the challenge faced during the contest, saying, "Staples was big, strong and very aggressive, but our guys showed great resolve in taking advantage of our scoring opportunities and holding fast in defense against their hard running."

The Hoyas host #1 ranked Gonzaga this Friday, May 10, at 6:00 PM for a big Friday night match.
