Florida State opened up their Florida D1AA season with an impressive 33-14 win over Central Florida.
On a windy day the breeze had a distinct effect on field possession for the teams, nd FSU handled it a little bit better.
"Typically UCF gets better through the season and they are a good team; we expect them to be improved later on," said FSU Head Coach Michael Gomez.
UCF put a lot of pressure on Florida State and in fact charged down at least four kicks, two on the same sequence. However, the Seminoles showed plenty of tenacity in not allowing those charge-downs to be converted into points.
"We managed to get out of it," said Gomez. "We have a number of guys with experience, even our younger players, and that really helped us."
Aiden Wingert, Danny Bennett, Ethan Frisch, Cole Ryan, and Jack Carpenter all scored tries for Florida State, which took a 14-0 lead into halftime and scored early in the second half to keep control.
Cole Ryan converted four of the five FSU tries for a personal haul of 13. Juan-Luke Fouche and Pason Patterson scored tries for UCF with Caleb Goertzen converting both. Frisch led an excellent front-row showing with Connor Simon at loosehead and Dillon Brewer at hooker.
Also in Florida, University of Florida beat Eackerd 43-26 while North Florida shut out Florida International 39-0. UNF found space out wide on the day with wings Jason Martin and Roberty Setzer combining for five tries.
