Four Northeast Conferences Join for 7s Collaboration
Four separate college conferences in the Northeast have joined together to run a series of 7s tournaments this spring.
The idea behind the collaboration is to provide teams with more options for opponents, and more flexibility in playing tournaments. Several times there will be more than one tournament on a weekend, all with participation limits (no tournament is taking more than eight teams) allowing teams to pick based on location, and what competition is available.
The Colonial Coast, New England Wide, New England RFU, and Rugby Northeast will hold over 20 tournaments serving more than 70 teams. There will be 14 women's tournaments for about 38 teams, and 10 men's tournaments for about 32 teams.
"With Chip Auscavitch stepping away from the NEC7C this past winter, our conferences recognized an opportunity to build upon the rock solid foundation that he had left us, and to continue to foster the growth of collegiate 7s in our region," said NEWCRC president Dave Meyer. "Planning was a collaborative effort among all four conference, and we've continued to bring in volunteer admins from each of our conferences to help the season run as smoothly as possible."
This season will be called the CC7s—Cross Conference 7s—and while there won't be standings tracked for the season this year, that is expected to be part of it all in years to come.
