The Fort Hunt Warriors swept the Virginia State Championships, winning finals in the U16 and U18 levels over the weekend.

Both teams went into the weekend feeling like they were playing their best rugby, and with the Fort Hunt Varsity
looking forward to the National Championships, and the younger players going as well to play a couple of development gams, there is still much to play for.

The Fort Hunt U16 team played a talented and athletic Loudoun team that had won the matchup between the two teams earlier in the season. And this is the third year in a row that these two clubs have met in the U16 State Final.

The game on Saturday was a close affair the entire way. Loudoun held a 14-12 lead late in the game, with both teams playing strong defense and putting pressure on the other.

With just a few minutes left in the match, Fort Hunt was playing a man down, and Loudoun had possession. At that point, Fort Hunt flyhalf Max Runyan intercepted a pass and ran 50 meters for the game-winner. That sealed it 19-14.

This is the third year in a row that these two clubs have met in the U16 State Final.

On a beautiful spring Sunday, Old Glory DC hosted the Rugby Virginia U18 State Championships at George Mason Stadium as the curtain-raiser for the Old Glory DC vs. Seattle Seawolves game.

The game was played on a natural grass full-sized pitch and the large area of the playing surface opened up space for plenty of scoring.

Fort Hunt entered the playoffs with a 13-4 record and faced the Richmond Griffins (formerly Strikers) in the state final for the third time in three years. The teams had split the previous two finals.

Fort Hunt started the scoring right away off the opening kickoff when Hamilton Carr slotted a penalty kick in the first minute. Carr was outstanding at flyhalf in the final. His control of the Warriors' attack, kicking to open space all day and putting his runners into space with smart passes.

Carr was instrumental to Fort Hunt's success in the final and all year.

"Hamilton has to be one of the best playmakers the Warriors have ever had,"said Fort Hunt Head Coach Dale Roach. "And he does this as a sophomore. He has come on so strong this year and continues to get better.”

The Warriors also saw some impressive performances from forwards Nana Bekoe at No.8, lock Aalee Rashid, and props Roth Schumaker and Jack Tanner. The Warriors kept the pressure on the whole way to a 62-14 victory, taking their 9th straight state title.
