This year a few college teams have opted to change divisions and it seems to be working out.
University of Dayton is one of those and, really, their presence in D1AA has been linked to history more than anything else. Dayton's male undergraduate enrollment almost qualifies them to be D3. Instead, this year, along with Ohio University, they opted to move to D2, which has been a smarter move for the Flyers.
"I think the biggest difference in terms of the conference is that we aren't playing schools with a lot of resources going towards rugby, like Louisville or Bowling Green, Week 1 and getting blown out and discouraging young guys from playing," said club president Kevin Krebs.
And yes, that is it in a nutshell. Dayton's roster is not really big enough to battle through D1AA, but when they play D2, they have a not-insignificant number of players with good high school rugby experience to put together a useful side.
