Florida Finals This Weekend

Weston seems to be on a roll. Juan Ruiz photo.

The Florida HS championship day is set for the International Polo Club in Wellington, Fla.

Weston will face Orlando in the championship game. Weston has a relentless and well-organized attack that is instilled with some little elements of unpredictability that could see them through. Their halfback combination of Alex Ruiz and Matthew Mairowitz is working very well together, but more importantly, they don’t seem to get rattled.

If anyone can rattle them it might well be Orlando, whose forward pack can control ball and thunder up the middle. They (just barely) corralled a speedy Riviera Beach team last week in the semis, but they did enough. Weston is perhaps a little more varied in their attack, but led by players like Lock Jimmy Davis and flanker Josue Ayala, if healthy, Orlando should be up for it.

This could come down to goalkicking, and both teams have good ones. Mairowitz does not mind kicking tough angles and you could argue that the only reason Orlando is in this game us because Justin Smith’s boot got them over the top in a couple of close games.

This isn’t the only final at the IPC. The tournament for second-place teams in the pools finishes with the Plate Final, with the Cape Pirates, a hard-nosed team that has dealt with a lot of difficult, close games all season. The Pirates, though, will have a tough job to take on Cardinal Gibbons, who beat a well-regarded Key Biscayne team 17-10 in the Plate Semis.

In the Bowl, it will be Boca Raton against Daytona Beach. Daytona lost to cup finalists Orlando by a point on March 14 and might feel they were good enough to be in a higher-level final. Well, here they can prove it against a Boca Raton team that has been very competitive in a tough schedule, and has to be tired of losing games by three or less.

Finally, the Shield will be the Archbishop McCarthy Mavericks against Tampa Krewe, and here is where the Krewe can finally claim some hardware after a very tough season. The Krewe are a solid outfit, but they were in the toughest pool from top to bottom. They beat Riviera Beach and Daytona, and may have lost to Daytona, Cape Pirates, Naples, and Orlando, but at least once against each they were within striking distance at the end of the game, and they lost to Weston by only ten.

There’s some pride from the North in the fact that all four of their teams are in finals. Their argument that Orlando, Cape, Daytona, and Tampa are in the toughest pool may hold a lot more water if they sweep Saturday.

The championship day will also feature a U14 playoff with Miami, Boca Raton, Key Biscayne, Okapi, and West Pines all involved. The U12 finals include West Pines, Boca Raton, Okapi, Wellington, Miami, and two teams from Key Biscayne.
