Gonzaga vs St. Edward is the latest in a series of tight games among top-ranked school teams.

The school-team pecking order is closing up tighter and tighter as the season progresses, and one example of that was this past weekend in Ohio.

Gonzaga visited St. Edward in a meeting of #7 and #16. This was a close one, and St. Edward was in the lead for a time in the second half at 12-7, before Gonzaga pulled away 28-15.

"We started to lose a bit of steam and it came down to momentum-killing mistakes," said St. Edward Head Coach Greg Miranda.

It was still a strong showing for St. Ed's, despite the face that they have been slammed with injuries.

"Injuries have been tough this year, but I am enjoying the coaching challenge with it and enjoying the chance to develop the young talent," Miranda said.

Challenge would be a good word to use, as St. Edward has augmented their regular clashes with local rivals St. Ignatius but taking on Notre Dame de la Salette (a 14-14 tie), a tour of Ireland, and, this coming week, a very good Detroit Catholic Central.

For Gonzaga, who, like Ed's, played Ignatius (both were competitive losses, 27-7 for St. Edward, 28-21 for Gonzaga), this is the next step in a slow burn toward peaking at the right time.

The Eagles toured New Zealand, and this coming week they host the Gonzaga Classic tournament, which brings a series of challenges.

"St. Ed's were a physical team and played hard," said Gonzaga Head Coach Peter Baggetta. "We left too many points on the ground and kept the game closer than it should have been. It was a good opportunity for us to continue working some different combinations as well as having three of our teams travel together and play."

Gonzaga's freshmen beat St. Edward 38-24 and the sophomores lost 27-26 to Ed's JVs.

But all of this is just another example of a series of close games filtering through the school season in the colder-weather states. Xavier 12-0 over Rye, Greenwich 33-17 over Fairfield Prep, Xavier 31-26 over Greenwich, Ignatius 29-17 over La Salette, Greenwich 42-20 over BC High, Xavier 15-5 over BC High, and Gregory the Great's early-season win over Gonzaga 33-26 all indicate a bunched-up region among school teams.
