Eastside and Liberty remain the top two teams in Rugby Washington's Boys HS league, but they had to work for it.

Eastside eked out a 14-13 decision over the Rainier Highlanders to go to 3-0.

Rainier held a 10-7 lead at halftime after taking control of the point of contact.

In the second half, flyhalf Kooper Tasler's penalty goal made it 13-7.

The score held for most of the half, but Eastside No. 8 Alex Ball scored on a pick-and-go with flyhalf Valentin Rozeck converting. That was Ball's second try of the match, and for Rozeck, his kick proved to be the game-winner

Rainier threatened to score the rest of the match, and they had a kickable penalty, however, Tasler was the ine yellow-carded for the penalty try and so wasn't available to take the shot.

Rainier is likely itching for a rematch.

Liberty defeated Chuckanut 33-12 to move to 3-1.

This was a solid defensive effort from Liberty, with wing Clarence Elbourne making key tackles tackles on the edge and flanker Wayne Olive defending the forward pods.

Offensively, Liberty took advantage of the outside edge with center and captain Marek Wright finding Sio Filikitonga on the wing for the first try. After 14 tough phases near the tryline, hooker vice captain Rohan Twohey found Wright on an inside tip pass for a try.

Center Bryson Smith scored two tries on the day and was a constant threat to break open runs. Flyhalf Paddy Anderson converted two and added three penalty goals, but it was the team defense that made it all happen for the Patriots.
