St. Davis, Pa. — Eastern University announced the launch of men’s and women’s collegiate rugby, expanding athletic opportunities while further enriching campus life and supporting the University’s commitment to holistic student development.

Both programs are expected to compete in small-college competitions in the early stages, likely Division III within the National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) framework, while remaining active members of USA Rugby. Although designated as club programs, Eastern Rugby will operate as an elevated varsity-style experience, receiving comprehensive support services consistent with varsity student-athletes, including strength and conditioning, sports medicine, academic support, and access to athletics facilities.

This enhanced club model reflects Eastern’s commitment to broad-based participation and creating meaningful opportunities for student engagement.

“We are excited to expand our athletics offerings with the addition of men’s and women’s rugby,” said Brian Bingaman, Athletics Director. “These programs enhance campus life, create new opportunities for student engagement, and align with our mission and values.

As part of the program launch, Eastern University will begin an immediate national search for a Director of Rugby to lead both programs, establish a sustainable competitive model, and cultivate a culture aligned with the University’s values.

Through the addition of men’s and women’s rugby, Eastern continues to strengthen athletics as an extension of its mission as a diverse, Christ-centered university committed to faith, reason, and justice, preparing student-athletes to lead and serve both on and off the field.
