With a different captain and some other lineout changes, the USA Men’s team is looking to regather some momentum against Japan on Saturday.
Japan is certainly favored, and the likelihood is that the Eagles will be playing Samoa next week in Denver for 5th.
That game will be a winner-take-all for a Rugby World Cup 2027 place.
For Japan, Head Coach Scott Lawrence has named Jason Damm is captain. Damm, who was a standout for Clemson and built from there to become a respected and feared professional and international player, will skipper the Eagles for the first time.
“I think the most important addition for us right now is Jason's leadership at captain,” Lawrence said Friday night. “It's been a long time coming, and I think it's, it's been a real positive change for the group, to have that happen. I think Jason's gota way about him in which he brings together the team, a multicultural team, which is the Eagles. It's a reflection of our country, and I think he really appreciates that and brings the team together in that way. He’s got a balanced mindset, doesn't let things too good or too bad, change the way he looks at the next play.
“If you want to trust your captain, and trust starts with his playing ability, and Jason plays an American game plan, and he goes forward, and he's physical, and that demands respect from his teammates, and builds trust.”
For Damm, he said leadership is a team effort and he will rely on his teammates. But his first thought is to lead by example. The RFCLA player looks have on a difficult-to-take penalty against Canada in which he was penalized in Canada’s 22 for an overzealous ruck.
Walking that line between being aggressive and getting a penalty can be difficult. He wants to lead by example, and at the same time that’s not always charging full steam ahead.
