Doylestown Throws RugbyPA for a Loop

Hunter Pulford on the charge for Doylestown.

Doylestown looks ahead to some interesting Rugby PA challenges after a notable 17-15 win over Gregory the Great Academy this pst week.

This following on from a 45-42 win over Vienna (a team GGA beat 7-3, go figure), Doylestown seems to love the close ones.

But Head Coach Mike McCandless has some insight on that.

"In the early part of the season our training focused on our offense and getting structure to our offense," McCandless told GRR. "Clearly we didn't do enough defense. So we worked on that after the Vienna game and I was really pleased with out defensive performance."

McCandless said that while he feels good about the Doylestown team, they are still very young.

"We're still waiting to see what we have," he said. "But against GGA we knew they are always very disciplined and tough. Everyone on the team is like a wing forward. Our games played some really tough defense and they did a good job of starving us of ball."

Being patient and composed worked for Doylestown, and when they were not patient and composed, they got into penalty trouble or lost possession.

But, as he said, they are young—seven sophomores started that game.

The young players are good, though. Young scrumhalf Jack Reilly is providing quick ball. Jamie Weir has been very impressive at flyhalf and is a good decision-maker.

No. 8 Gavin Graham handles the ball well and is solid with the ball in hand, combining nicely with fellow back-rower Hunter Pulford. Lock Tim Fuhrmeister is an impact player, runs well, hits rucks, and scores tries.

In the first weekend of RugbyPA D1 action, Berks beat Conestoga by the maximum reportable score: 35-0; Malvern Prep surprised observers with a 40-28 win over LaSalle College HS, and Cumberland Valley won 35-19 over D2 Knightmare.

Doylestown faces a wounded LaSalle this coming weekend, with Berks hosting GGA, and St. Joseph's Prep at Cumberland Valley.
