The Doylestown Academy Boys High School team defeated Gregory the Great in an impressive display, Sunday, to win the Rugby Pennsylvania Boys D1 championship.

These two teams played last year in the final, with Doylestown winning by a converted try. However, this year, while things were tight for a while, Doylestown was in control at halftime and cruised to a 42-17 win.

Doylestown started the match well, taking the the opening kickoff and pounding their way down the field with over a dozen phases before senior captain Marco Burns crashed over for a 7-0 lead before five minutes were up.

Gregory the Great responded, putting together a long sequence and getting over the line to make it 7-5. But the rest of the first half pretty much belonged to Doylestown. Fullback Louie Cipollo, back in the lineup after an injury, was excellent with ball-in-hand and 17 minutes in he cut through the line, made several defenders miss, and offloaded to scrumhalf Jackson Reilly, as always right there in support.

Reilly carried the last 20 meters untouched to push the score to 14-5.  Centers Liam Hoey and Nick Miletto followed with long runs through the GGA defense to get tries. All were converted by Jamie Weir, and Doylestown had a 28-5 halftime lead.

Greg's needed to get some points quickly and they did open the second half with a try. But when Doylestown prop Gavin Sailer crashed over at 15 minutes, it seemed like the defending champs were set to repeat.

The teams traded tries and impact sub-Chris Imperato wrapped it up for Doylestown. Six different players scored the six Doylestown tries, with three from the backs and three from the forwards. Hooker Marco Burns opened the scoring and was named player of the game, while Weir converted all six tries, and Doylestown had the win 42-17.

Doylestown plays next in the National Championships in Elkhart, Ind., taking the #4 seed against #5 Thunder out of Southern California.

Montgomery County defeated Delaware County for the Boys D2 title.
