Doylestown Keeps Winning in PA
It was win day once more for Doylestown as the Pennsylvania-based club won comfortably over Berks to improve to 4-0 in Rugby PA league play.
“We put in a few tries early on and kind of took control from there,” said Doylestown Head Coach Mike McCandless. “We’ve got a bunch of young guys and towards mid-season they’re picking it up and they’re implementing what we’re coaching—we have athletes who are willing to learn and they are getting better every week.”
Center Bailey O’Malley has been a big contributor, and he scored twice vs Berks as he has taking tight hold of the center position. His midfield partner, Louie Cipollo, is starting to exploit gaps. Marco Burns leads the team as captain and hooker, while Jamie Weir runs it all from flyhalf nicely.
“We can play good rugby but we can be better,” said McCandless.
With wins over Gregory the Great, LaSalle College HS, Malvern Prep, and now Berks, Doylestown is now 4-0 with only 46 points scored against.
Chasing Doylestown are all those teams plus St. Joe’s Prep. LaSalle and St. Joseph’s tied 17-17 over the weekend. It was a big performance from St. Joe’s defense, as LaSalle had been averaging over 30 points per game.
Jack Druger scored two tries for LaSalle while playing several positions in the backline. His ability to break through the SJP line was crucial in getting LaSalle in scoring position. They needed it as they had to come back from a 17-12 deficit to tie the game.
“It was a very hard-hitting, defensive game,” said St, Joe’s Tom Dugan, whose team was sparked by fullback Aiden Quinn, who tested LaSalle repeatedly with his speed and elusiveness.
Both teams had the ball with time up—both teams committing penalties after the referee said it was the last play. Neither team was in a position to kick for goal so they worked their way toward scoring a try. The defenses held and the game ended in a tie.
St. Joseph's is now 1-1-1 and LaSalle 2-1-1. Gregory the Great and Malvern are now 3-1.
