Don't Look Now: Here Comes IUP
Don't Look Now: Here Comes IUP
One team to watch in the Allegheny Conference may well be IUP.
Indiana University of Pennsylvania shut out West Virginia on the weekend, and did so playing smart, disciplined rugby. Barry Ashway's kicking from the hand continually put the Mountaineers under pressure and forced them to play from deep in their own half. And with Colton Moyer winning ball in the breakdown and also in the lineouts, IUP was able to turn that territorial advantage into a territorial/possession advantage.
The upshot was two tries for RJ Beach, two tries for Bruan Arnold, first-ever IUP tries for Cam Taylor and Trent Stallings, and a try for Tyler Johnson. With Ashway converting five of those the Crimson Hawks flew off with a 48-0 victory. This following on from a 45-12 defeat of Slippery Rock, one of the Small-College division teams in the Allegheny, and you've got the makings of a team to keep an eye on.
IUP rose four points in the Goff Rugby Report Men's D2 College Rankings, from #18 to #14. Next up is Kent State, which beat WVU by two points.
