David Still Leaves Sevens Eagles for Football
(USA Rugby Announcement)—David Still has announced that he will depart the USA Men’s Sevens program at the end of August to pursue opportunities with the XFL and NFL.
Still was a football standout at Saginaw Valley State University before finding his way to the USA Eagles via the RugbyTown National Training Center XO Academy.
While Still has had extraordinary success in rugby, he wants to pursue his dream to play professional football. After his departure this month, Still will play a year in the XFL to gain experience and prepare to pursue a spot in the NFL.
“I came to the decision when talking to my family and going to a few workouts, which showed me that I still have a chance at my true dream,” Still said.
“Being with the USA Sevens team has helped me tremendously, especially from a physical standpoint, and I’ll be well-conditioned to play football. I look forward to being out there and playing football, which was my first love, and I will cherish each moment I take the field.
“One thing I’ll miss most from rugby are the boys. We’ve been through a lot together, and they’ve supported everything that I’ve done - good and bad - including this big change in my life.”
Head Coach Mike Friday on Still’s departure from the program:
“We are both excited and sad that David is leaving the sevens program. His childhood dream has always been to play football so to have that opportunity to chase that is something that all of us on the program support fully and wish him luck with. In his time with us he made a huge physical impact, learning as he played and turning heads in the World Series. It is testament to his hard work and commitment to learn a new game and go to dark places that enabled him to play in the Series. Hopefully those behaviors will stand him on good stead as he chases his goals.”
Still made his debut for the USA 7s team in 2021 and has been a regular player for the team since then.
