Danville Oaks Tap Kort Schubert as New Head Coach
Former US Eagle and Cal All American Kort Schubert has been appointed as the Head Coach of the Danville Oaks Boys Varsity Rugby team.
Schubert brings with him years of high-level coaching and playing experience.
Schubert is widely regarded as one of the best back row forwards to ever to play for the Eagles. He earned 49 test caps in 50 matches for the USA Men's National Team from 2000 to 2008. At the time of his international retirement, Schubert was the third most-capped US player of all time, and had started 49 test matches at the back row positions, a USA record at the time. He also captained the USA team during the 2004 and 2005 seasons.

"I'm honored and excited to be taking over as head coach of the Danville Oaks Boys Varsity program," said Schubert. "I look forward to building upon the strong rugby foundations and winning culture established by recent head coaches Chris O'Brien, David Liebowitz and Jon Straka. We are eagerly anticipating and preparing for another highly competitive Northern California high school rugby season in 2022."
Schubert began his rugby career at Jesuit High School in Carmichael, California where they won the 2006 National High School Rugby Championship. He then played college rugby for the University of California Berkeley where he captained the Cal Bears and won five consecutive USA Rugby Collegiate Championships. Schubert was a Collegiate All-American and also earned two consecutive Woodley Awards in 2001 and 2002, an award then given to the top collegiate rugby player. He was named 2001–2002 University of California Berkeley Athlete of the Year.
Schubert made his debut for the USA Eagles in May 2000, playing against Japan in a 36–21 win. Schubert started all four matches for the USA during the 2003 Rugby World Cup, scoring three tries, a USA Rugby World Cup record. Schubert joined the Welsh side Cardiff Blues in the Celtic League in August 2004 where he played until 2006.
Schubert joined the University of California coaching staff from 2007 to 2008 as an assistant to Head Coach Jack Clark. After starting a family and moving to Danville, Calif.m he began coaching the Danville Oaks Junior Varsity High School team. He quickly moved to the Varsity coaching staff and coached the Oaks forwards to the 2018 National Invitational Championship. Schubert was recently inducted into the Cal Athletics Hall of Fame in June 2021.
With Danville Head Coach Chris O'Brien moving on to coach at Cal Poly, the Oaks needed a Varsity Head Coach, and turned to Schubert. A team statement said that the Oaks "are very excited that a coach and player of the caliber of Schubert has moved into the Head Coaching role of the Oaks Boys Varsity program. The Oaks are keeping consistency in the coaching staff by retaining current coaches David Liebowitz (former Cal national champion and All-American) and Jon Beck (former Cal national champion and All-American) on the staff."
Additional Oaks coaches will be added to round out the Boys Varsity staff.
