Danny Barrett Named New Executive Director of Golden Eagles

The Golden Eagles Association has announced that former USA 7s and 15s star Danny Barrett has been selected as the new Executive Director of their Eagles Sevens support group.

As an experienced Eagle player, Barrett brings a personal level of experience to rugby enthusiasts and donors and he will guide their efforts to advance the cause of USA Eagles Sevens Rugby, both men and women.

Barrett, 33, is a veteran USA Eagle in both 7s and 15s, representing the USA 54 times on the HSBC World Rugby 7s Series as well as 13 times for the Eagles in 15s. He was named to the Sevens World Series 2016-17 season Dream Team.

Barrett was on Eagles squad for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro and 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympic Games, the 2018 Rugby World Cup 7’s in San Francisco, and the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England. Before his international career, Danny had a successful collegiate career at the University of California, winning back-to-back National Championships in 2010 and 2011. He was named All American four times from 2010-2013 and also led Cal to victory in the 2013 CRC 7s tournament.

After graduating from Cal in 2013 Barrett signed with the USA 7s program in Chula Vista, Calif.

Born and raised in Pacifica, CA, Danny went on to attend Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory in San Francisco before becoming a five-year letter winner at Cal. During his high school years, Barrett played rugby for the San Francisco Golden Gate RFC.

“I am excited about my new role with the Golden Eagles and look forward to supporting our men’s and women’s Eagles 7s," said Barrett. "I plan to increase funding for both programs and to expand the Golden Eagles membership. I intend to honor our former Eagles 7’s and their commitment to the national teams which laid the groundwork for where we are today. I want to focus on moving the needle for rugby in our country by looking to youth rugby as the future of the game in the US.

"I look forward to working with our players, coaches, staff members and fellow Golden Eagles to ensure the USA is a competitive force for years to come.”

The Golden Eagles are a non-profit organization that provides financial support to the program to cover the costs to compete on the HSBC World Series Circuit, World Cup Sevens Championship, and support our Olympics aspirations and provides support for career advancement to the USA Rugby 7s athletes by helping to create opportunities for players to prepare themselves for a professional life during and after their rugby careers.
