D1 Men's College Rugby This Weekend: New Kids vs Traditional Clubs
D1 Men's College Rugby This Weekend: New Kids vs Traditional Clubs
We have at least 26 games plus a tournament with about as many short-form games this weekend in Men's D1 rugby, including the reigning D1A champion and the reigning NCR D1 winner.
Rugby East
We go into more detail here about the Rugby East. Tonight's Kutztown at Army game kicks it all off with a bang. Notre Dame College at St. Bonaventure is one to watch also.
Liberty Conference
We go into some detail about the Liberty Conference here.
Big Ten
Purdue won big and Notre Dame lost relatively close, but how close? We'll see this week when these two play each other.
MAC
Western Michigan's start for the season was impressive with a big win over Michigan. Now they open the MAC season against an IUPUI that lost a close one to Kentucky. Cincinnati vs Pit and Louisville vs Dayton should be close.
Heart of America
Rivals Kansas and Kansas State play each other and Iowa State is at Iowa to kick off the Heart of America. Most of these teams have to pick themselves up after losses of varying degree last week. HOA should be a tight competition this year.
What Else?
One of the great battles of Michigan-based college teams with Davenport, a longtime D1A program that showed steps forward last season, and Adrian, a new varsity program that finished 2nd in D2 last season. (By the way, Adrian just signed on former Louisville standout and MLR pro Larome White as an assistant coach.) This is an interesting test between a full varsity team and all its trappings, and a school-supported team that isn't technically varsity, but plays in tougher competition and produces national team players.
Kentucky welcomes 2021 D2 champs Thomas More to D1, and we'll be at that game so we are looking forward to seeing close-up how such a matchup balances out.
The Southern Conference has expanded into a four-team D1AA competition with UNC Chapel Hill (a big-school cub team) facing off with Lander (a smaller-school college-supported team). This is the new normal.
Dust Off the Rust Tournament
The University of North Texas hosts a series of games between teams from various divisions, but most are D1 sides. These are warmup games (as the name suggests) and two programs, Texas A&M and Baylor, send two teams. All games will be 20 minutes. So those results might be a an interesting heads-up, but also deserve a grain of salt.
