Fort Hunt found some confidence-boosters in their visit to the Carolina Ruggerfest, and translated this over the past weekend with a close game against Gonzaga.

Of course, Gonzaga was looking to pick themselves up after an opening-week loss to Gregory the Great. As has been the issue for a lot of teams, getting outside in the snow was difficult for Gonzaga, so they might have felt a little like they were playing catchup.

For Fort Hunt, an early loss to Doylestown and then Ruggerfest had them perhaps a bit more game-tested.

Fort Hunt took an early 7-0 lead after a well-structured sequence over the first two-and-a-half minutes, all finished by the forwards. Gonzaga responded with a solid sequence of smart, well-controlled attack and scored off a lineout from a penalty.

Fort Hunt took a penalty goal but Gonzaga was over the tryline twice more—one off a nifty show-and-go and one with the big boys powering ahead—to lead 21-10 at halftime. The Eagles added one more and led 28-10.

But Fort Hunt rallied, making it 33-24 with less than 10 minutes to go.

Then Fort Hunt scrumhalf Drew Peters intercepted a Gonzaga pass and raced 90 meters to score and put his side within a try at 33-29.

But Gonzaga controlled the ball at the end to close out the game, kicking a penalty in the closing moments to seal it and win 36-29.

“It was a well-played, high-speed game,” said Fort Hunt Head Coach Dale Roach. “Gonzaga kicked well finding space; their lineouts were very good and they punished any mistakes that Fort Hunt made.”

And those mistakes? Roach said his team made far too many.

Gonzaga, meanwhile, will eventually get better at finishing off chances, said Head Coach Peter Baggetta.

“We’re still in a preseason timeframe,” said Baggetta. “We need to be more patient and clinical inside the 22. Against GGA we had 16 entries only four scores. Against Fort Hunt 17 entries and only six scores.”

Next up for Gonzaga will be Charlotte Cardinals at a neutral site. Fort Hunt will host the Bethesda Roosters.
