Clever Plays Final Game in Japan League
Clever Plays Final Game in Japan League
USA MNT 15s captain Todd Clever played his final game for the NTT Communications Shining Arcs in Japan Saturday.
Clever, who has had a tough battle getting playing time at NTT despite there being a direct correlation between his playing time and their success, is expected to announce a new signing soon. In this game, against Ricoh, Clever came on at No. 8 with ten minutes to go. With the score 16-12 in favor of Ricoh, Clever stole a lineout that set up one final attack for NTT. They failed to score, and the game ended with a loss.
The USA loose forward and former Nevada-Reno All American was a key part of NTT's first-ever winning season, scoring the winning try in the game that secured their final victory. But with an emphasis placed on Japanese players, Clever was on the outs this season, and has been actively seeking a new team. He has apparently been courted by teams all over the world.
Judging from from his farewell Facebook post, Clever will not move to another Japan Top League team.
"Tomorrow could be my last time playing at Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium. I have some special memories here, from winning the Japan Cup & Top League with Suntory, it's also where I earned my 50th international test cap for the Eagles. The Fans here in Tokyo have been great to me! It's been a great chapter in my rugby career."
Addendum. While his long-term playing home isn't confirmed, Clever did tweet that he will be playing for OMBAC in the near-term.
