Charlotte Tigers Roll On in Florida
The Charlotte Tigers laid down something of a market over the weekend, beating both the Florida Jaguares and Jacksonville Wolverines in the Florida Invitational.
Both the Tigers and the Raleigh Redhawks beat the Jaguares, a select side of players from throughout the state, and Jacksonville. But the Tigers were a little more convincing over the weekend. The Redhawks beat Jacksonville 46-14 and the Jaguares 12-3. The Tigers won those games 69-5 and 43-6.
Despite having lost lock Sederik Sexon to injury a few weeks ago, Charlotte has continued to be on-form. Charlotte has plenty of high-quality depth at lock with Bruton Peacock and AJ Riera available and Ty Mendenhall coming in to make an impact. Their defense was impressive, holding Jacksonville to just the one try and the Jaguares to two penalty goals.
No. 8 Eduan van Heerden was again excellent, prop Trevion Reed continues to bowl over defenders, and flyhalf Porter Goodrum is a points machine—he even slotted a penalty goal from 30 meters out against Jacksonville.
Flanker Jyilek Harrington and fullback Koen Webbb came in off the bench and made an impact. Harrington was an excellent defender and a slashing runner on attack. Webb handled Florida's kicking game nicely.
