Carlsbad Rides Second Half to Win Over St. Anthony's
Carlsbad defeated St. Anthony's 43-7 Saturday, moving to 3-0 in SoCal Youth Rugby's Open Division.
The game was might tighter than the score reflects, with St. Anthony's center Sone Aupio causing Carlsbad plenty of problems when he had the ball.
Both teams played a tight defensive first half, with mistakes and penalties, often offside, and the first period ended 7-7. The second half opened up, and Carlsbad was able to play more phases and move the ball.
St. Anthony's did well counter-rucking and poaching, and that disrupted Carlsbad's attack for a while. But as time went on Carlsbad's forwards were able to win more over the contact battle and start to build possession.
No. 8 Ami Amiatu-Tanoi was a powerful ballcarrier all day. Lock Mana Bulabalavu was a tough presence and strong in the lineout. Scrumhalf Solomon Williams played superbly as usual, running the tempo and making breaks when the opportunity was there.
