Canada Girls Edge HSAAs
The USA Rugby Girls HS All Americans lost 29-24 on New Year's Eve to Canada's U18s in a game that capped off both teams' winter camps.
The game, held in Chula Vista, Calif., produced plenty of positives for both sides.
A try from Kristin Bitter and two from Angelina Mason, followed by one from Liz Tafuna gave the HSAA's a 24-14 at halftime. But Canada stormed back and scored three times to win it at the death 29-24.
“The players were ferocious on defense but got a little disorganized at times which allowed Canada to capitalize on mistakes," said HSAA Head Coach Martha Daines. “Overall, the team worked hard throughout camp to make those connections so vital to success on the field. We were impressed by their willingness to take risks, work together to make adjustments and be creative — especially on attack."
This was actually a pretty encouraging result for the USA. On the girls side it has been difficult to log such competitive results because of player availability and just the up and down nature of the talent pool. But this USA Rugby team did well, and while failing to close out the match was a disappointment, it still shows there's talent there.
