Cam Dolan Deserves Praise As He Gets His 50th
Cam Dolan will earn his 50th cap when he runs on against Argentina in the Rugby World Cup, and it's a well-deserved milestone.
The former Naples Bears HS player, who went on to play for Life University and captain the USA U19s and U20s, Dolan played in all four 2015 Rugby World Cup games, but didn't start in any of them.
Still, his performance then prompted some support from these pages: DOLAN DESERVES TO START
Joe Taufete'e crowed about Dolan's achievement, mentioning that he's still a bit of a goofball.
"Huge congrats to Cam. It's crazy to see him do that with his characteristics," the USA hooker said. "He's a young boy still. He's still jamming along on (computer game) Fortnite – he loves it."
He's also become something of a clutch player, especially in the USA's 30-29 victory over Samoa last fall, when he scored two tries to turn the game around.
The 6-6 No. 8 was first caped way back in 2013 and since then has made sure he's a fixture on the side. Since the beginning of 2017 Dolan has missed only five test matches, usually because the coaches were trying to test out someone else. In those 25 tests, he started at No. 8 23 times. He has been remarkably durable, and always available for his country.
In getting his 50th cap, Dolan passes for sole possession of 11th all-time among USA MNT players. Just ahead of him are Blaine Scully (who gets his 53rd against Argentina), Dave Hodges (53), and Paul Emerick (also 53).
But notable for Dolan is his winning percentage. In 49 test matches he's been on the winning side 27 times. Only one Eagle has won more games, Todd Clever at 29, and Clever needed 76 matches to get there. Dolan, at 27-20-2 has the best winning percentage of any USA player with more than 20 wins, except for Bryce Campbell (who is a remarkable 21-8-1).
His 16 tries is tied with Clever for 4th all-time, one behind Emerick.
All of this is to say that Dolan deserves a nod for his 50th, but also for what he has accomplished for the USA since he was a teenager. Here's hoping he is just embarking on the next 50.
