Cal Poly women have opened up their season with some impressive showings.

The Mustangs logged a win over their alumni and then a close (31-24) loss to BYU in San Luis Obispo.

New Head Coach Dai Morgan has worked through a long preseason with the CPSLO team.

"It's always difficult for players to adjust when a new coach arrives and it's also challenging for a coach to convince players in a successful program to accept a change in philosophy and adapt," said Morgan. "The long preseason has helped us introduce new systems and structure to our game management and overall philosophy of how we want to play the game."

This past weekend Cal Poly won went through the Slugfest tournament at UC Santa Cruz. They won all of their shortened games with shutouts.

Game 1. Cal Poly 48 - Cal Berkeley 0
Game 2. Cal Poly 50 - San Jose State 0
Game 3. Cal Poly 61 - UC Santa Cruz 0

In addition, their first-year players shut out a young UCSC team 43-0.

"We're really happy with not only the results but also the way the girls played," said Morgan. "We are trying to play an expansive game and are fortunate to have the athletes to execute this style of play."

This is a big jump for Cal Poly, which has been solid for some years. But the result with BYU is very impressive. The Cougars have made it clear they are probably the best team outside of NIRA and Life University. They beat Southern Nazarene 43-38 earlier in October and that pretty much makes that statement.

So for Cal Poly to be within a try of BYU is notable.
