Cal Poly Rebounds with Victory
Cal Poly picked themselves up after a loss to Saint Mary's and turned it around Saturday to beat Santa Clara 67-17.
Scrumhalf Frank Lucey scored three tries and fullback Alexander Domine scored 17 points off a try and six conversions. Just about the entire threequarter line got in on the action, with inside center Sam Wheeler, outside center Porter Tett, wing Nicho Domine, and wing Luke McKernan all scoring tries. In the pack prop Jasper Stone and No. 8 Ryan Wenstrom (twice) also scored.
"It was a step in the right direction," said Head Coach Chris O'Brien, who added that the forwards played well. Well sure they did, and they set the platform for seven tries by backs.
Cal Poly is now 1-1 in the California Conference, which still has plenty of rugby left in front of it. Next week Santa Clara is set to host Saint Mary's, Grand Canyon (who tied Arizona this past weekend) is scheduled to visit UC Davis on Friday, and UCSB is expected to take on San Diego State. GCU is doubling up on the trip to California and has Cal Poly on the schedule for Sunday.
