BYU Wins Again
BYU Wins Again
BYU completed their two-game tour of Southern California with a 50-14 defeat of San Diego State.
The Cougars got three tries from wing Kevin Schofield, who scored four on Thursday against Cal Poly (BYU Thumps Cal Poly) and also got tries from Josh Whippy, Tua Laei, Ara Elkington, Matt Jensen, and Sam Merril. Jared Whippy converted five.
BYU was just to athletic and aggressive. When SD State made a mistake, the Cougars pounced and not only took the ball, but a considerable territorial advantage, as well. Schofield might have had four on the day but a clear run to the tryline was called back because he stepped on the touchline.
Whippy scored the opener on a snappy line as he inserted into the backline. The Cougars ran a play from an attacking scrum and Jared Whippy hit his brother in stride with a perfect pass. Jared then set the next try up with a nicely-weighted kick to the wing, where Laei was there to catch and touch down.
Schofield scored the next one on some good support running behind Josh Whippy. The forwards got rolling and ran the phases, and that allowed Josh Whippy to surge into the line again and set up Schofield.
SD State then had one of their better sequences of the day, working the phases and getting numbers over the ball to clear out. However, they consistently pass behind their support, forcing various Aztec runners to pause in their advance. It was patience and the work of the forwards to maintain possession that allowed SD State to finally score in the corner.
The second half started with a missed scoring chance for BYU, and then Schofield finished off a long-range effort, and the Cougars cruised.
