The Louisiana High School season opened up with Brother Martin shutting out their rivals Jesuit New Orleans 29-0 over the weekend.

It was a good showing for a Brother Martin side that has been going from strength to strength.

Brother Martin forced a turnover in Jesuit territority. And with some good phase work and continuity from the Crusaders created some space for first-year wing Brady Barbier, who sped in the score in the corner for a 5-0 lead.

The Blue Jays put some movements together in response but couldn't quite get into good scoring position. So it as Brother Martin that scored the next one when captain Chris G’sell found a gap in the centers and ran in. Jacob Davidson converted and it as 12-0 about 20 minutes in.

Jesuit came out determined in the second half and had run of play in the third quarter of the game, but Brother Martin’s defense stiffened when needed.

At the 55-minute mark, senior vice-captain Austin Dupuis poached a ball and the Crusaders quickly moved the ball to the wing.

Some nifty passing set up wing Tyler Gleason to score in the corner to make it 22-0.

Junior center Ahmaad Karim wrapped it up with an interception and a nice gallop to paydirt. That wrapped it up 29-0.

Jesuit garnered some measure of revenge in the junior varsity with a 29-7 victory.

But this was an excellent start for the defending state champs as Brother Martin kept a clean sheet and scored five tries against an always-tough Jesuit side.
