After winning the Bishops Cup vs Dallas Jesuit, St. Thomas moves up 16 spots.

Goodness this was a difficult weekend for the school rankings.

We had a series of upsets and had to make some serious decisions on where teams are at the moment. What really happened for a lot of teams is that if you're not playing, you're at risk for dropping down.

Could we make an argument for an active team like Torrey Pines or Charlotte Catholic to be #1? Sure. That argument might have been put forward this week if Jesuit had beaten Rio Americano by a wide margin.

Yes we do think that Herriman and St. Ignatius (Cleveland) will be near the top by season's end, but we do think, idle as they are for now, they are vulnerable to being overtaken.

We might well see the all-California winner get there.

Big movers! Rio Americano is one of those newer school teams we wait on before jumping on one result. In this case it was a win over St. Francis and a close loss to De La Salle. OK, fine. De La Salle beats St. Francis and we have a bit of a hierarchy with all three of those teams.

Of course, that's not how it happened. St. Francis rambles past De La Salle and we've got to wonder what's going on. Meanwhile, Rio goes on to beat what we know is a very good Jesuit team.

So who is on top? Right now we've got these Northern California teams gathered together in a relatively tight group near the top. That's key. We think they're all pretty strong AND they've been playing.

So we have Rio Americano moving up 19 spots to #8 ... for now. Jesuit drops to #9. St. Francis moves up 23 spots to #14, and De La Salle is #16.

Now, we moved St. Francis down after their opening loss to Rio Americano. But after the results against De La Salle and Jesuit, we decided it wasn't moving someone down after a result, but we should be moving teams up.

Also moving up is St. Thomas of Houston (+16 spots). That's for a win. Two close losses, Mira Costa 27-31 vs Cathedral catholic and St. Augustine 21-31 vs Torrey Pines, move the Saints up 13 and Mira Costa 12.

We switched those two because St. Augustine had beaten Mira Costa by a point earlier in the season. But we wanted to see some other results against tough opposition, and now we've seen it. The Saints put a big scare into Torrey Pines and the scoreline doesn't really illustrate that.

We will be seeing more games within these warm-weather teams and the hierarchy will straighten out, we think.

But, the upshot of all of this is that we could easily see a new #1 in the next week or two.
