It’s a very busy weekend in D1A college rugby this weekend with nine games involving D1A teams.

The biggest game might well be Cal (GRR #2) at UCLA (GRR #8). These two teams met at the Storer Classic, with Cal winning 43-0. Cal is looking really strong. Their senior combination at halfback of Solomon Williams and Rand Santos is surrounded by some impressive underclassmen talent. This isn’t a one-off peak, but a rolling wave of strong players working an open, quick style of play that takes advantage of that talent.

UCLA now has size and power up front and with that they can use their ability to slice up defenses with passing, elusiveness, and a very good kicking game. However, Cal held the Bruins scoreless in a warmup match. Can they do it again?

Cal Poly has a busy weekend as they host Santa Clara on Saturday and Western Washington on Sunday. These are important games for everyone. Santa Clara won well last week but suffered some injuries in the process. Cal Poly has shown they can score in bunches.

WWU is looking to test themselves (witness games against Trinity Western and University of Victoria) because the Vikes really want a D1AA national title. They have one in 7s, but want one in 15s.

UC Davis plays two challenging games in San Diego—the big road trips sometimes lend themselves to these overnights. Certainly a 500-mile jaunt justifies that. Remember, California is big, especially North-South—in D1AA Cal Poly Humboldt and Claremont Colleges are almost 700 miles apart. At 1-2, Davis could potentially make a big move this week.

One more game to keep a close eye on—St. Thomas (GRR #19) at Arizona (GRR #11). St. Thomas moved up to D1A after winning CRAA’s D1AA final (thanks to a last-minute try against San Diego in an all-time classic). The Bobcats, playing in Southern Florida, have a challenging travel schedule ahead of them and have embraced it.

They lost to Mary Washington in the CRAA Fall Classic and last week beat the Cayman Islands 43-26.

This trip to Arizona is a big on as the Bobcats look ahead to matches with Queens, Army West Point, Life, Penn State, and Mount St. Mary's. We don’t get a ton of East-vs-West D1A games, so from a rankings standpoint and a CRAA seedings standpoint this game is worth a very close look.
