After winning two conference games, Indiana Tech was barely pipped by Aquinas Saturday to shake up things in the Big Rivers.
IT almost executed a comeback, scoring a try to turned a 32-22 deficit to 32-29, but they couldn't get that last try.
Aquinas was coming off having lost to Davenport in a comeback and were determined to close out this game. They managed that.
The Warriors kept coming. Shane Poni gave the Saints another timely response with a try in the 65th minute, pushing their lead to 29-22. Inman later added his second penalty kick of the afternoon to make it 32-22, and those three points proved crucial when Indiana Tech closed the gap to 32-29.
Dominic Zavala scored tries at the midpoint of each half, each time scoring at a crucial moment.
Liam INman kicked well and his penalty goals late in the match were very imoportant.
For Head Coach Lance Hohaia, this was a big moment.
"I thought we played well for large parts of the game and it was a really even contest for the most part. In the final 15 minutes, I felt like we started to make some real inroads and gain some ascendancy. We had at least two good opportunities to ice the game and score, but we couldn't quite nail that final execution piece."
This result puts Aquinas in a strong place in the Big Rivers.
The standings below include a forfeit loss by Thomas More to Marian. This is an unfortunate happenstance caused by numbers problems at Thomas More augmented by injuries. Hopefully that can get fixed.
